Not sure the platform approach is the way to go for energy data... Federated data infrastructures seem much more versatile/flexible and therefore the way to go in the 21st century. Check for example data-infrastructure.eu for more on the topic. First applications are more in the personal banking or video gaming space, but this approach should reach energy data soon?

My wheels are spinning! Plaid and Project44 are good examples to think about. Another obvious industry to consider is smart home, more broadly speaking than just connected thermostats. Platforms for the smart home exist (and many have tried and failed), but overall they haven't been widely adopted and utilized by consumers. Plaid is being "used" by consumers and businesses because their banks are using it, and these groups use banking tech frequently. So, how can we skip the user and build usage / adoption into other workflows or products frequently used today?

This is what http://apparent.com does with things like solar farms and battery storage operations. EV charging stations can serve to balance the grid.
